File permission error saving Normal.dot on a restricted desktop

Technote (troubleshooting)
Problem
The Lotus Quickr Connectors are installed on a restricted desktop environment. When you close an application such as Microsoft Word, you are prompted to save changes to the Normal.dot file. Because the local drive is restricted and this save is not possible, the following error occurs:

"Word cannot complete the save due to a file permission error."

Because the client PC has restricted access, you are not able to write to the Normal.dot file.
Cause
When you access Microsoft Office applications (for example, Word or Excel) using the Lotus Quickr Connectors, the application automatically loads the Connector Office AddIn to the Normal.dot file. The AddIn adds menu items for working with and adding content in Lotus Quickr. Therefore, the Normal.dot additions need to be saved on the local drive. However, if users do not have access to the local desktop, it will not be possible to save these changes.
Resolving the problem
Lotus Quickr Connector Plugin build 8.2.0.183 or later contains an enhancement that addresses this problem (reported as SPR# JRIE7NRLK6, RELS7ENLZX). To avoid these error messages, download and apply the latest Quickr Connector fix from IBM Fix Central:
There are also workarounds that can be applied prior to the Connector client upgrade. Use one of the following options as a workaround:
  • Configure the Microsoft Word application so that users are not prompted to save changes to the global template file Normal.dot.
  • Disable the Office Addin in Microsoft Word. Exclusively use the Lotus Quickr integration features of the Windows Explorer integration, which allow for the same functionality as when working with Word files. To disable the IBM Quickr Connector Addin in Word requires a modification to the following client registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\Word\Addins\CLBAddin.CLBAddin\LoadBehavior
This value needs to be changed from a 3 to a 0 (zero).
